A Juneteenth Reflection: Navigating the New Battlefront of AI Bias

As we celebrate Juneteenth today, I find myself filled with a deep appreciation for the sacrifices and struggles of those who came before us. This day is a poignant reminder of the history we carry and the future we are capable of creating.

It’s a celebration of liberation, resilience, and the enduring spirit of humanity.

Envision a Better, Bolder Future

This Juneteenth, we honor our past while envisioning a better, bolder, inclusive future.

I am incredibly grateful for the brave individuals who acted with intention, often in the face of immense resistance, to champion freedom, justice, and equality.

But today’s battles are no less challenging. Yes, the shackles may have evolved, and the enemies may have transformed, but the fight is as real as ever. Our enemies now may not be clad in iron, but they’re omnipresent – in AI, bias, misinformation, and lack of access to opportunities.

Data: The Secret Arsenal in the Age of AI

As I work with the world’s best, exploring the new frontiers in AI, I’m constantly reminded of its vast potential and inherent risks.

AI has the power to liberate, empower, and effect transformative change. AI also has the power to entrench biases and increase vast injustice exponentially.

AI is a new frontier where humanity is facing modern warfare.

Data is our most potent weapon. It’s a weapon we must wield wisely.

The key to tackling this bias lies in the earliest stages of AI development: pre-training data. This foundational layer of information forms the basis of AI’s learning and must reflect the diversity and inclusivity we aspire to in society. By scrutinizing our pre-training data, by deliberately debiasing it, we can shape our AI systems to be not just intelligent but also just and fair.

Cracking the Code

Eliminate AI bias to help people make informed decisions

At Reactionpower, we are dedicated to exploring how pre-training can serve as the backbone for creating more inclusive, fair, and efficient systems. We can cut through the fog of uncertainty, ignorance, and prejudice.

We must create a world where people make more informed decisions.

We are committed to supporting leaders that align with our core values. We will unlock insights that can help fast-growing companies like yours remain not just competitive but also compassionate, conscientious, and inclusive.

We stand on the shoulders of giants who broke physical chains.

The battlefield is different, but the spirit remains the same. The heroes of the past fought for a vision of equality. Today, we must fight with the same valor to create a future where the systems that power decisions and information are just.

Leaders, Trailblazers, and Visionaries!

Here’s a call to action for you.

As we celebrate Juneteenth today, remember that we’re not just reflecting on a moment in history but a movement. A movement that continues to this day and requires our action and commitment. The AI revolution is taking hold, and we must take bold steps toward a future that mirrors our shared vision of justice, equality, and liberty for all.

To the visionaries, the value creators, and the vocal advocates of the past and present, we honor you. We recognize your sacrifices and value your contributions. And we pledge to carry forward your legacy and to do what we can to shape a future that’s as bright as the flames of your courage.

Here’s to a future where humanity wins again… and again… and again.

Lost in Translation: Addressing Linguistic Bias in AI Systems

AI systems have made remarkable advancements. However, they perpetuate linguistic bias that can result in the total erosion of languages. This, in turn, can decimate cultural diversity, lead to the loss of identity, and further perpetuate societal inequalities.

That’s why I’ve been diving into this complex issue and exploring how we can unlock growth opportunities by building AI systems that work for everyone.

1.  Addressing Gender Bias in Language Translation Systems

Gender bias is prevalent in language translation systems like Google Translate and Microsoft Translator, perpetuating stereotypes. For example, professions like doctors or engineers are translated as male by default. Even when gender is unknown, Microsoft Translator defaults “o” in Turkish to “he.”

Similarly, Google Translate often uses masculine form, even when the context suggests that a woman is being referred to. For instance, if you input “My doctor is amazing” for translation into Spanish, Google Translate will automatically use the masculine form “Mi doctor es increíble,” even if you are referring to a female doctor. This gender bias can perpetuate societal inequalities and limit equitable access to opportunities for women, particularly in professions where gender stereotypes are already prevalent.

To address this type of linguistic bias, it is important to ensure that there’s diverse representation on the teams developing these systems. The training data used to develop translation models must include copious amounts of text that represent both masculine and feminine phrasing. Additionally, these systems should include options for gender-neutral language.

2. Ensuring Diversity in Machine Translation Systems

One of my favorite things is listening to my cousin speak in colloquial Kikuyu. He’ll have me rolling, laughing until tears are streaming down my face. There are deep cultural nuances that Google Translate doesn’t quite capture.

Machine translation systems are biased toward certain languages and language varieties. For instance, a system trained primarily in formal written English will struggle to accurately translate informal languages. It’s like a high school clique where only the “popular” kids got all the attention. That’s so not cool, machine translation. Broaden your horizons. Include training data that represents diverse languages, dialects, and registers. Seriously, it’s the right thing to do.

3. Reducing Error Rates for Non-Standard Accents

Speech recognition technology isn’t doing any better. Most have been found to have higher error rates for individuals with non-standard accents or dialects. It’s like they’re saying, “Sorry, we only speak standard.”

This is because the training data used to develop the technology is biased towards standard accents, leading to errors and inaccuracies for individuals who sound even slightly different or speak other dialects. To address this bias, it is important to include a diverse range of accents and dialects in the training data. Additionally, systems should be evaluated on their ability to recognize a variety of accents and dialects.

4. Lost Voices: Virtual Assistant Can’t Understand Accents and Dialects

Virtual assistants such as Siri or Alexa may struggle to understand or respond to certain accents or dialects, particularly those that are not well-represented in the training data. This can result in errors and misunderstandings, leading to negative user experiences. To address this bias, it is essential to include a diverse range of accents and dialects in the training data. Additionally, the system should be evaluated on its ability to understand and respond to a variety of accents and dialects.

5. AI for All: Promoting Linguistic and Cultural Diversity in Machine Learning

Finally, the erosion of linguistic and cultural diversity is a critical concern that must be addressed in the development of generative AI systems. If a language is underrepresented in the training data used to develop an AI system, the model will struggle to accurately understand or generate content in that language. Consequently,  communities that speak that language will experience erosion of linguistic and cultural diversity. This leads to further underrepresentation and marginalization. To promote linguistic and cultural diversity, it is essential to include a diverse range of languages and cultures in the training data.

Mind Your Language

Tackling Bias in Generative AI Systems

Addressing linguistic bias in generative AI systems requires a concerted effort to promote diversity and inclusivity in the training data. We also need to continually assess the algorithms’ designs, data processing techniques, and how humans interact with AI systems.

We must include a wide range of languages, dialects, and cultural nuances to ensure that these systems accurately represent and serve all users, regardless of their linguistic background. Ultimately, we must create AI systems that are technologically advanced, socially responsible, and equitable.

Black History Month: A Tale of Progress and Promise, One Byte at a Time

As we commemorate Black History this month, my mind swirls with thoughts of the remarkable figures who, with their vision, values, voices, and valorous actions, have shaped the world as we know it. Their powerful alliances and heart-wrenching sacrifices paved the way for the liberty and progress we enjoy today. They proved that shackles—both literal and metaphorical—can indeed be shattered, freeing us from the fears, limitations, and oppressions that once held us captive.

On this momentous month, I want to pause and celebrate the victories of the past. But, more importantly, I want to reflect on how we can apply the lessons learned from those courageous enough to question the status quo, and use their inspiration to shape the future.

In our modern world, the battleground has shifted. Our team at Reactionpower is committed to minimizing unjust bias in AI and stand at the forefront of this new war. It’s a battle fought not with weapons of steel but with bytes and algorithms. It’s a struggle against the perpetuation of harmful biases, all hidden within the folds of machine learning models and datasets.

I believe in the transformative power of AI. However, I also understand its potential pitfalls. As we train our AI models, it’s vital to remember that they learn from us, from our history and our present. They absorb not just our knowledge but also our biases, replicating them at an unprecedented scale.

This is why our work is so crucial. By creating pre-training data that consciously counters unjust bias, we are actively breaking the shackles of prejudice that could potentially taint AI technology. We’re ensuring that the AI of the future reflects the best of us, not the worst.

But we can’t do it alone.

Just as those who came before us relied on powerful alliances to champion their cause, we need your support. Top companies are major influencers in the technology landscape. The AI systems you develop, use, or sponsor have a far-reaching impact. Your commitment to reducing unjust bias in AI can make a significant difference in this battle.

So, this month, I ask you to honor the past, not just by remembering the trials and triumphs of those who struggled for freedom and equality, but by actively working to ensure these values are reflected in our technology.

As leaders, you have the power to influence the course of AI development, steering it toward a future that values diversity, inclusivity, and fairness. And remember, in this fight, every byte counts.

Let’s learn from our past to build a better future—a future where the shackles of bias have no place and where technology empowers us all, regardless of our race, gender, or background.

Together, we can make sure that humanity wins again… and again… and again.

Here’s to a Black History Month that honors our past and uses those lessons to build a better future.

The Social Dilemma: Do We still Trust Our Social Networks?

Have you seen The Social Dilemma? I just did. It’s a Netflix documentary that uncovers how social platforms manipulate our attention purely to maximize their own profit. Of course, as a digital marketer, I’ve known this for a while. But when it’s told from that perspective, it makes you think ?

In the wake of the pandemic and the racial reckoning that’s followed George Floyd’s murder, trust and relationships have been top of mind.

Trust & Relationships

Trust in social media platforms eroded significantly, particularly over the last year.

We’ve had cultural landmark moments and heard concerns about how social platforms are scaling harm with AI and Machine learning algorithms that don’t take into account diverse communities. We’ve had major boycotts of Facebook ads by some pretty large multinational brands, based on how the social network moderates content. The #DeleteFacebook Movement also continues to reappear from time to time in the wake of the latest data privacy scandal. And the list just goes on.

Many people ask if the backlash against social media has real weight behind it.

I genuinely don’t think social media is in the long-term decline.

Social networks revealed our global humanity when they first launched a little over a decade ago. And they still hold us by those relationship tentacles today. We are social creatures and when our physical connections were unexpectedly curtailed earlier this year, we turned to each other online. Even as things slowly turn to whatever the new normal will be, we’ll still be seeking each other out whether we’re close by or worlds apart.

Who Has Your Data?

We love to share with our friends and family. We want to connect, build community and create tribes around our passions and interests. We want to express ourselves.

A generation has grown up in this space. While people are concerned about danger on the digital front, it’s hard to go back. But as you use these platforms that have become so ubiquitous in our lives, it’s important to pause and ask yourself, who has your data? Every time we quickly accept the terms of service, we don’t realize just how much we’re giving away.

That’s why I go back to trust. I think if social platforms (and brands!) can build a relationship of trust with us we are more open to having our data being used, particularly if we believe it’s useful for us.

With more transparency and the ability to see how our data is tokenized, we can shape what we are comfortable with. We’ll need to have basic qualifications about who we’re sharing our data with. Ultimately that calls all companies to higher ethics and principles.

Streaming Games: Race to Reach the Masses

A few years ago I asked Reed Hastings, Netflix’s CEO, if the company would adopt game streaming. His answer was very clear: Netflix was in the movie business, not the gaming business. While Netflix has decisively stuck to a core focus, we’ve seen a huge surge in investment from big technology companies in game streaming.

Several major tech companies, from Google and Microsoft to Sony, Amazon and Verizon already either have or are working on game streaming services. Google Stadia is slated to launch in November.

Ultimately, it’s a numbers game.

There are 2 billion people who play video games on the planet today. Many of those people don’t own a television or a PC. For most, the phone is their compute device. Today, far more people are able to watch shows and movies thanks to smartphones and media digitization.

The companies that win the race to reach the masses will be those who can leverage technology effectively to reach and engage a customer wherever they are, on the devices that they have. The best way to do that is by lowering the barrier to entry — When you eliminate stuff like the need to own a TV and game console or the requirement of a stable internet connectivity, you open up a whole new market.

While we’ve made similar shifts before e.g from DVD — physical media — to streaming digital entertainment, streaming games is a lot harder than TV. Games can require serious processing power. Digitization alone only opens the door so much. Making high-end, processor-intensive games available through streaming services kicks open the door.

The door is cracking. For example, Netflix has introduced a level of interaction that’s completely different compared to a regular movie or TV show. With movies like Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale players make various decisions throughout the runtime to alter how the story progresses. While that sort of gameplay is far from something along the lines of Fortnite or God of War, it’s a fascinating approach that may open up a whole new market of “gaming” viewers.

5 Myths About Digital Technology in Africa

Africa has a lot to offer – just another reason to take off our blinders.

Here are some myths that keep us from truly connecting.

#1. Africa is for Low-Skilled Labor

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is initiating immense change, driven by digital forces which are expected to shape the next decade – artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), network-based logic, augmented and virtual reality, quantum computing, etc.

The unprecedented speed of change will bring more advancements in the next ten years than in the last 250 years.

With a surplus of workers, more stability, and technology transforming many nations’ economies, Africa is now an attractive destination for investments, fast-growth startups, and the high-tech companies driving these technology trends.

By 2030, Africa will be home to more than 25% of the world’s population under 25. The continent is poised to reap a demographic dividend over the coming decades as its labor force grows to be the largest in the world by 2035 and its dependency ratio declines. With that, there’s an opportunity for the continent to drive inclusion, economic growth, and rapid expansion in the pool of highly-skilled professionals in cognitive STEM-based skills (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

There’s an opportunity to develop not just an inclusive future of work, but new transformative ideas that add tremendous value to the evolving world. Unleashing our full potential is essential and requires diverse, inclusive collaborative models that take into account the colorful tapestry of our common humanity on both local and global levels.

#2. Africa is not a Powerhouse

For anyone interested in business, understanding what is going on in Africa is essential. The opportunities on the continent are immense.

6 of the 10 fastest-growing economies are located in Africa, according to the world economic forum. This fact serves as a testament to its ambition.

Africa is the world’s second-largest population. It has one of the largest workforces from the ages of 18 to 30 slated for 2030. While many other continents are reporting declining populations, Africa still has a high growth rate.

70% of the population is under age 30 and sub-Saharan Africa will soon be the only place with birth rates at replacement level or higher. The continent is also increasingly urban, with more than 50 cities with populations greater than a million people. Thus Africa is well-positioned to support the workforce of the future. The young age demographic, coupled with the urbanization of Africa, is a recipe for further innovation and development.

Over the past decade, Africa’s growth has continued to accelerate.

Long-term trends show that African countries are now more attractive investment destinations.

The contribution that Africa could make to the world’s economy over the next 20 to 30 years is enormous. Also, the need for Africa to contribute to certain global problems like climate change and transition to a low carbon economy is absolutely critical.

#3. Africans Lack Access

Mobile data usage in Africa is expected to grow 20 times by 2025 – a statistic that is double the projected growth on a global level. Mobile technology has transformed many African countries because it is more readily available than computers. Consider the following:

  • Mobile banking is everywhere in Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya.
  • Cell phones are as ubiquitous in Nigeria and South Africa as they are in the United States – about 9 out of 10 people own one.
  • Smartphone usage is on the rise, with 34% of South Africans and 27% of Nigerians owning one.
#4. Africa Lacks Innovation

The truth is Africans are undoubtedly resourceful.

Some lack access to education and have few resources but breakthrough innovation and the capacity for creativity continue to abound.

Africa is a hotbed of brilliant ingenuity.

Consider the following African inventions as examples:

  • Mathematics – Most accounts of ancient mathematical systems seem to begin and end in Egypt. But that’s not it. The Lebombo bone found in Swaziland and the Ishango bone, discovered on the border between Uganda and Zaire, both baboon fibulas, are the world’s two oldest mathematical objects – the former at least 35,000 years old. The Ishango bone may be the oldest table of prime numbers.
  • Digital Laser – Dr. Sandile Ngcobo invented the world’s first Digital Laser.
  • Construction – Prof Mulalo Doyoyo invented the “cementless concrete” Cenocell and Amoriguard, a paint whose fillers are based on recycled industrial waste.
  • Medical Inventions – Prof Mashudu Tshifularo was the first to transplant 3D-printed bones for reconstructive middle ear implants on 3 March 2019, at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital. The Freeplay fetal heart rate monitor was also invented in Africa. It is a hand-crank-powered diagnostic device.
  • Traffic-Regulating Robots – Thérèse Izay from Congo-Kinshasa invented humanlike robots to regulate traffic in Kinshasa. The robots function as a traffic light combined with a crossing guard. In March 2015, there were five robots regulating traffic in this city, located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
  • Drone – Nigeria’s first unmanned aerial vehicle, commonly referred to as a drone, was created at the Nigerian Air Force School of Engineers. It can fly nonstop at 3,000 feet for nearly four hours. This is a significant accomplishment because it was Nigeria’s first indigenous drone flight.
  • Mercedes S-Class Interior Design – Steeve Burkhalter from Congo-Brazzaville designed the interior of the Mercedes’ concept car.
#5. Africans Live on Less than a Dollar a Day

The middle class is ambitious and working toward bridging economic gaps.

In fact, 23 African countries are now middle-income level. Africa’s leading cities account for 80% of consumers with the disposable income to acquire assets such as cars, televisions, and appliances, according to research from Fraym.

Urban corridors and regions like Lagos (Nigeria), Johannesburg (South Africa), and Nairobi (Kenya) stand out for their financial-technology hubs, middle-class consumers, and connectivity.

Beyond the top three in sub-Saharan Africa are cities like Luanda in Angola, Khartoum in Sudan, Dar es Salaam in Tanzania; and Addis Ababa in Ethiopia.

There are many small, microfinance projects which help lower-income people get access to capital or learn skills to earn a better living.

African countries are also maintaining relationships with non-African countries, specifically China. Such relationships are helping many African countries execute large infrastructure projects such as roads and dams.

What’s the Connection Between Myths and Stereotypes

When we buy into these myths we create false stereotypes.

Remember that Africa is a vast, culturally diverse continent. There are likely folks who benefit from keeping you in the dark about the continent. But what’s worse, these myths and misconceptions are a disservice to humanity.
