Gratitude is an awareness that we are the recipients of goodness, the fundamental goodness of the universe – which is always moving in our direction. And when goodness arrives at the door of our consciousness, we are moved to share what we have received with others, accelerating the cycle of gratitude in our lives and in the lives of others. Out of our gratitude flows creativity, compassion, generosity, courage, trust, peace, joy, selflessness, humility, bliss. We see the infinite hand orchestrating Life, loving us, just as we are.
So today I’m choosing to practice the art of gratitude. I am doing as my good friend John Carter suggested – keeping a journal by my bathroom mirror, so every morning before I brush my teeth I will write 5 reasons to be grateful. And as I complete my day in the evening I will take time to write 5 more reasons I am grateful. Then I will stretch myself to see the gratitude in everything – to reflect on my day and write one situation, person, place or thing that caused me some sort of emotional disruption or aggravation and turn within, asking, “What has this experience taught me? What have I learnt about myself?” And I will write in my journal what insights have come forth, starting with the statement, “I am grateful for this experience because I have learnt….”
As I flex my gratitude muscle this month, I hope to strengthen my spiritual vision, truly seeing the gift in everything. Because I know, I have so much to be grateful for.
